New Boat

Well the Pyranha Burn died on the graveyard section of the Leven, nice split in the hull. I'm not going to rant about it because I can no longer be arsed! Motivation and enthusiasm went to an all  time low, as I was forced to use my playboat or my brothers Jefe. I went playboating and rediscovered what its all about really good fun on the waves and holes. But still sore feet and ears made me long for a new creeker.

I decided to go for a Jefe in the end, just to see if it is a good as everyone makes out all we need now is a last blast of rain. Until then playboating will have to make do!

Cheers to WCK for all their efforts to get me back on the water. Watch this space to see what my verdict is.

Hiking and Hitching

Yup recently on an easy run of the Leven the Pyranha Camo bust, arse! That’s putting in mildly, a big split in the hull thanks to the graveyard. So to cap it off the weather dried up and snow fell. Scotland was beckoning so off I trotted to Braemar and the storm hit the hills full on the equivalent of a good class 4+ rapid. A good sleeping bag kept me warm in the bivi that night. Up a few hills on the Friday but could have easily been in a white box, I moved to Tayside to see family and a few more hills in white out conditions ice axe and crampons! Cheers Faye might have been a different story without them.Any way to get to the point most of these walks were from A to B requiring a lift back to the car. I stood by the road side in appalling conditions with my thumb out waiting for a lift. On the first day 4 cars past before some one stopped. On the second day at least 10 cars passed before the local vet stopped. Why is hitching becoming harder for the honest walker/paddler? I wasn’t dressed to kill/ abduct/ vomit all over the car or its owner! Just a little sweaty and knackered, those who did pick me up, cheers and keep up the good work. I pick up hitchers if there is room. I once got a lift in a brand new top of the range Omega I said “Are you sure?” I was dripping wet. “Yeah sure hop in, it’s only a car” was the reply. This I thought was brilliant, he couldn’t care less!  Next time I will wear a top hat and tail coat see if that helps. I might get a lift in an Aston.

Happy Hitching

Watch this space to hear about the boat issue.

More paddling
Written by Jack Simpson
Sunday, 09 March 2008 13:45

Yahoo it rained, all friday night was wet and only in the Kent and Lune valley from what we could tell from the paddling  network.

We did the Sprint in the morning at a fab river which we had forgotten about, Steve had spotted it was up so Kriss and I went for the ride. As a bonus there were not many trees either, all the holes wwere well formed and kept us on our toes.

The plan for the afternoon was to go to the Dudkosi aka The Duddon sadly Ned told us it hadnt rained there, so not enough to make it worth the trip over.

The Kent however was up and sticky, Steve went off to sell houses. Whilst Kriss and I went for a blast. Gunpowder gorge kept us on or toes and force falls forced some rolling practice. Kriss cleared off  and Ned turned up and stepped up the gear with a new JEFE Grande. Another run down the Lower Kent more playing and exploring new lines.

Just in case I hadnt had enough water Dan rang up, "Upper Tees?" oh yes a new river for me and lots of interesting new lines. One in particular got me guessing has it hasn't it? Is it possible?

The Upper tees is a short run but it packs allot in allowing lots of movement around the river lots of nice little flicks and tight holes keeping you on your toes. Low force was brilliant for boof practice.

Someones got to do it!

Well had a quiet couple of weeks due to the boring high pressure giving us that awful blue skies and sunshine combine that with a wee ski holiday and the paddling gear hadn't come out for a while. tims_pictures_315-1

Then a good omen appeared when Joe from WCK rang, "Your new blades are here" brilliant news. Along with a wet Monday this week things were looking good. Josh and I had a quick night blast down the Leven, the new blades felt good all we needed was more rain.Rain all day Friday made the Lune fantastic to look at on the way home. Dan and Glyn where on the phone straight away to see what the score was. We decided to meet up at the Clough have a nice pie and help Dan face his demons! Sadly the water had gone so we drove to Ingleton to try our luck  there.

I have looked at this serious beck several times, but never had the right water. Saturday was different, the level was perfect Glyn and I ran everything we could down to Kiwi pot, Dan and Glyn set up some safety for me. Off I went not a drop you would want to get wrong, whatever the level. Fortunately the river gods were on my side! Dan went to watch us through the gorge from the bridge. Two drops in a tight confined gorge very intimidating with no safety. I came out the bottom relieved and on a high. Glyn decided to try some old skool rodeo in the bottom of drop two, and to see how good Dans rope skills were. We got him out, his boat ran the rest on its own! So I got out and helped the lads with the boat. Enough fun for one day so we left the section from leap of faith down for another day and went for a beer.

Sunday everything had dropped off so the lower Kent beckoned for a training run with two likely lads from Sedbergh. Adam had never done the run before and put in a sterling effort, learning fast as we went down, and kept Fraser and I on our toes with rescuing! TOP MARKS for enthusiasm.Sadly got to work on Monday, some ones got to do it!Until next time, cheers.

Gear
Written by Jack Simpson

Well, I broke my paddle on the Crake the other week, real bummer! Left me to use the old playboating paddles on a quick night blast of the Leven with Mr Josh and Poke. Blimey it was good. Your senses come into their own. It's fantastic edging the boat and boofing over the lip in to Backbarrow. The hotel lights give you a nice big pool to land in. After the big weir you're back in to the dark world of you and your senses. I highly recommend it to anyone. The Kent  in particular is good fun in the dark, especially the finale. The only rules are; there are no rules, just make sure you have done it in daylight before hand!

Back on the subject of gear, a bonus really. I found a Dagger Redline on the Lune at Lincolns Inn Bridge on Monday. Any one who's lost it, give us a shout.

Oh, and the problem of my bust blades has been resolved. Some sweet things are coming in from WCK, can't wait, 'till then its back to the spares.

Cheers

Go Big or go Home!

With not much rain falling over night in the lakes over night we met up at Mommas food company. The rain radar had showed there had been rain up near Carlisle and the borders. A quick decision was made and Louis picked the Irthing. We shot up the M6 superhighway, and with great navigation from the guidebook and roadsigns we turned up at Gilsland.

The river here was a healthy brown colour, so we headed up to the firing range of RAF Spadeadam. Fortunately the red flag wasnt flying! A short wet walk from the layby Crammel Linn came in to view, it went quiet for a while as we scouted the falls. Decisions were made and back to the motors to get some gear.

4 giddy paddlers, headed over the moor to the fall. We all agreed on the same line a nice little drop on to a platform the paddle of the edge, easy! Louis fired off beautifully a big boof saw him clear the fall and paddle away with a big whoop. Steve Ed charged off and came out smiling. Kris and I were left at the top along with our nerves. Kris went off well and rolled at the bottom. I couldn't see him from the top but watching the others on the bank below you could tell there was a slight pause of hearts as his first roll didn't work.

I was left up there on my own, all the bravery evaporated, and my nerves started to kick in. My legs turned to jelly as I walked back to the boat, my stomach was a tight ball. As I  put my deck on I gave myself a good talking to and paddled in to the flow. A nice flick on to the platform, a correction stroke then WUMPF off the edge.

I rolled up and paddled away with a fantastic feeling of euphoria.p1260012

Adventures on the Esk
Written by Jack Simpson

All week at work it had rained, warming up for a good paddling weekend. Saturday; The weather cleared up for a quick wobbly blast down the Kent in the playboats, with everyone groaning about how the big boats are much more comfortable! So a remedy was needed. Saturday evening in to Sunday more rain and drizzle fell from the sky. The upper esk was suggested by Kris, having never done it before I agreed.

I knew there was a big walk in but was not quite sure how big, all I can say is its further than it looks.

Two keen runners, a mountain guide, and Ned! sweated up the Esk valley to the falls which drain Great Moss. I was unsure what I was letting myself in for but hey what's the worst that could happen.

We got up to the falls and did the usual scratcing of chins proceeded a remedy indeed from Saturday's activity.  It looked a bit boney in parts but we ran the opening slides up to an interesting drop.

The interesting drop proved to be a test of my metal, Ned lead the way and styled it up nicely, I on the other hand decided to practice rolling in the half-way pool. Of all the places in the world it was not the place for tomfoolery, however it worked and the rest of the drop and following gorge went well.p1180204

After the gorge a quick portage round a rocky slide was another demanding drop Ned went first and hit hit well. I lost my bottle and left it for another day. p1180214

After this drop there was more chutes and slides including Kail pot, and Heron pot which rounded off a fantastic trip.

Until the next time I will have to find some bigger balls! Oh and practice on tight narly entrances.

Cheers to Kris for the suggestion otherwise another playboat run will have had to been endured on the Kent!
