Call me sentimental, but I love this! Thats pretty  much where i started, (different lake, but same theme!) thanks to Christopher Holliday for the short, and the 'snipe' flasbacks!

A lot of this later,  and on on a future trip get some good footage of narly boating , with actually starts to get into the heads of those involved.

Ok first up a video trip report from venezuela. A different location from the usual hangouts and shows us all we can find different stuff to do. The total antithesis to this nicely shot crap that populates much of the internet's kayaking content. I guess youve got to make cultural allowances for self hype, but has it really come to this!

On a more serious note, I also stumbled into this whilst trying various search words into You Tube. Its the footage of a tragic fatality a few years ago. Doug Gordon was paddling the Tsang Po (tibet) when this happened. I agonised for a while before linking to this (the title graphic is tasteless, but i couldnt find it an another form), but in the end decided that its always good to be reminded about possible consequences of our actions. All kayaking is an extreme sport (even the lune), for me I want to embrace this, accept it, and stare it in the face. Its a headspinner, but thats the point. If you dont want to see what happened, dont click.

The full account of this trip is in this book. Here is a news report from the time.

As the 'season' is winding up here perhaps its time to start planning that spring trip away.

How about the some classic early season runs in California. Here is the blog report from last years 7 rivers trip.

Or you could get that last trip in to Scotland. The Big Wet Huck features loads of Scotland's steeper runs(check out the rivers page). Its always wet up there (almost)!

Last option might be to  jet over to europe and catch the Rhein falls before melt starts. This clip is POV, and flat to start, but wait for it. If you need some anticipation build up and dont know the fall check this out first (at higher summer levels).

Movie Competition Results

1st - 'Come to Yorkshire' - Design Crisis winning a new Drakkar K44s playboat

2nd - WoW - Walking on Water winning £80 of vouchers from Winderemere Canoe and Kayak

3rd - Team America winning £40 of vouchers from Winderemere Canoe and Kayak

The judges also would like to commend  'Kayak 07', 'John Pinn' and 'Hero lines' for kayaking content, 'Spillway' for the most stupid/optimistic move and 'Llandsul spillway' for massive air!. 'How to have an epic' and 'up the creek' for film editing. Also nice to see local entires from Rob Beale and Duddon CC.

Judging was obviously difficult, and thanks again to all that entered, there is a lot involved in time and effort to get anything filmed, edited, add audio, sort the format and send it in. Hopefully it was a learning exercise for everyone and it was certainly good to look at others efforts. In the End Design crises stood out as they had a message to give out and were brave enough to do a bit to camera, both of these always require putting yourself on the line a bit.

Its obviously possible to argue the toss about the results (as we did!) and if the whole process inspires some good humored banter over a few beers then thats a positive!

Cheers all, and big shout to the sponsors of the prizes.

First up, the Braan again. This river is threatened (along with many others) by a hydro scheme. This is an increasing trend in this country and abroad, only this week comes news of water being diverted form Church Beck in the lake district. If we wish to preserve whitewater for the future then we (whitewater paddlers) need to make our voice count. The Braan campaign is having some success, so weight of numbers will now be useful. It only takes a few minutes to fire an email off.

Check out Davey Biggin and friends going hard in scotland, amongst the featured drops is the Hermitage on the threatened Braan (the second clip in the film after Easan Dubha on the Orchy).

This next fun clip demonstrates what a bit of community action can acheive. Making a river wave in Hawaii

Here is some retro action, Corsica in 1984. Look at the nimble boats and razor sharp palatta rolls! Still imagine the balls required to run this stuff before anybody had discovered boofs. The sport may look different now, but the basics of pushing yourself out of your comfort zone are all still there. These runs would have been very keen at this time. As Isaac Newton put it, were  "standing of the shoulders of giants".

I'd really like to get some retro footage of british boating together. Please get in touch if youve got anything at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
