Raining and pictures

It raining. Flood warnings for the North and East of Cumbria and the south of Scotland. Stuff was moving but not huge by dusk today.

If any could get any pictures then im still desperate for contributions to the new free guide that im trying to get together. Thanks to all that have contributed but im still short of material to use. If you could take a camera out and get some snaps that your willing to share that would be grand. Becks, falls, scenery, durham and Yorkshire, boats at landmarks  (pubs/coffee shops) and some of the easier rivers would all be we helpful. We're aiming to give a feel of a real day out in these places.

cheers, enjoy. ned

Catherine Tate bad news for canoeing!

Here is a funny we found on The Sun website also the reaction from the good old BCU!

Catherine Tate bad news for canoeing! Interesting to see the BCU's stance on this. Rather than depicting canoeing as a dangerous sport surely it say more about the awkwardness of some people.

I leave to you to make your own decision, Catherine Tate is on the BBC for a christmas special - should be good.

Merry Christmas all. Jack.

Leven cam

leven cam is born. Thanks to the Leven Fund and Windermere Canoe and Kayak.

Obviously its day one, and there are teething problems and calibration to sort. I have some high water shots of the location and will start calibration from tomorrow. We should be able to place some visible marker within the shot. the location is about 5 miles to the head of the river but gives a reliable indication. its also a good clue to the level of the nearby and lake fed Crake.

Thanks to Shorty and Kate for the install.

There is some great footage of the Petite Meccatina on LVM TV this week. Big, bold lines on long rapids all out in the wilderness of Eastern Canada. Check out the missed ferry at the end - I assume that was where he was trying to get too! He must have known really early on that he was heading for that hole! Check out the consequences...

There is some decent water in Japan. Here is a fantasy lines question I was teased by. In the last drop would you follow over the double drop or stay river left and take it one go? And before anyone goes all health and safety, and points out that they wouldnt actually run it, that is not the spirit in which the question is intended!

Here is some glossy stuff from David Arnaud's new film 'In flux'. I think I prefer films with a bit more 'real world' rough edges in them myself, even for the trails.  Anyway, nice filming.

Jack is now blogging alongside myself, (but were fighting the formatting issue again). Any more takers for opinionated rants please get in touch.

I've changed the banner ads around a bit, and Reflecta, WCK and Adventure Rush are all offering discounts to rainchasers users. All have helped the site out in different ways and we appreciate this, hence their ad. If anyone is interested in advertising, then we want discounts for visitors to the site and favours to progress the aims of the site (like water level updates, content etc). This is policy now. Obviously this high moral position may be quickly corrupted by anyone offering hard cash ;-).

The flip side of this is that we need to get the finance sorted for the longer term. It doesn't cost that much, hosting is (about £100/year), but it stil needs paying, and we'd like to generate some funds to develop more cams and gauges in the future. We want it to be a fiercely independent site so will look for a solution that fits that agenda.

We're close to another cam, and have got two more that we a pursuing at present. Also from Shap we got a start on the automated gauges. A big thanks to Guy and Glyn for moving this forward, but we are still a few technical headaches away from getting this system working. This is what we are aiming for. Watch this space. Cheers, ned.

Friday Forecast 14th Dec
Written by ned
Friday, 14 December 2007 05:52

Levels have dropped right off, although there is still a splash here in the lake fed rivers. SEPA is showing low levels in scotland and there is no rain forecast for the weekend.

Tides are low and surf forecast is uninspiring unless you can get to the open Atlantic coasts.

Time to do something different?
