Cumbrian ex-pat (reject ;-)?) Steve Rogers has a shiny new website for his images. He has gone from the Ulverston dole queue to pro extreme sports photographer in BC, but he insists that its not all glamour!
l know I'm biased on this one, but they are a fine collection of images and there are a good few local kayaking shots in the mix. Well worth a browse. |

Isnt it great when plans come together....
We are launching our second short movie competition, with awesome prizes from Pyranha and Windermere Canoe and Kayak.
Create and submit a 2 minute video short on the subject of boating. Entertain us, inspire us, make us laugh or cry. Best film wins. Simple.
The winner, gets a ticket to the world of the sponsored boater. A deal to be part of team pryanha with all its perks and opportunities. Up to 2 people will be taken into pyranha and get the full treatment. Amazing deals on boats and they are looking for people who can do films, so you got as good a chance as anyone else to extend the deal. Second prize is a really well worth having voucher for £100 quid at Windermere Canoe and Kayak, and third scoops a £50 voucher.
Entries must be submitted between Jan 1st and Mar 29th following the terms that are set out here. You've got plenty of time to plan and execute this. Films will be judged by an esteemed panel of filmakers, pro paddlers, kayak gurus, sponsor reps and me :-). In terms of a steer for what to make - very little, but make a film. Think of erotic kayak porn rather than fully lit close ups to music. Engage the brain, and be honest. Best/worst kayaking move is not the criteria, (though it may help!). We have no preconcieved ideas about what type of boating should win - sea, surf, play or river,
A big shout to the sponsors who have got behind this opportunity for the grass roots boaters of the UK to show themselves.
Rules - UK residents, not sponsored already, up to two in a team for first prize only. Submitted in the correct format to the right place, with previously publicly unseen material, between the specified dates (details forthcoming). Judges desicion final. No fees and no whinging.
What you got...? |

We have a stream of real time data of river levels, coming in from the Environment Agency. You can pick them up here. This is great news. Real time river data would really open in the potential for boating in the area. With such patchy rainfall and quick runoff times it should make a massive difference, particularly for those learning the sport and chasing the next level.
The trial is of limited time and scope. We will get an update on 3 sites every weekday morning. This will be reviewed after 3 months by the EA. The data stream is availbale to other local interested parties by arrangement with the EA. We at rainchasers hope to demonstrate that this arrangement is a winner for all concerned. Saving wasted journeys (and the associated carbon), avoiding scraping down rivers for the sake of, not missing that dump of rain on the other side of the hills. Showing the commanilty of basic common interests between those with a stake in the rivers protection, without getting into sterile old debates. We are hoping that the scheme will be extended and widened.
Its getting a bit congaltulatory at the mo - but a massive shout of thanks are due to the two people behind this. Jo Ratcliffe at the EA and Shorty (John Cresswell) at the computer. Both of then have believed in this and made it happen. If this ever makes your day, or saves you fuel, then you owe them a drink! Also thanks are due to Ben Lamb and Tim Burne. We are in Beta with the technicalities and we hope to address calibration issues ASAP, following that, we will improve the graphics.
For calibration we need a solid, objective river level report with a recorded time. A picture would be ideal or a descriptive report that is really precise. Get us at

Just a shout to all those who made Shap another successful night. Obviously big thanks to anyone who turned out on a super cold night, we hope you enjoyed it. These things cant happen without those helping on the night (and morning after) and the film-makers themselves. It was nice to have so many of the contributors there in person again. I think it adds to the sense of "anyone can get out there and run that stuff if you put your mind to it".
So thanks to Tom, Jonny, Shaun, Nic, Shorty, Hazel, Rob, Jack, Joe, Steve and Kris - who unluckily couldn't show his masterpiece after dropping his hard drive :-( . Also film-makers Ali, Slime and Dave for introducing their films and Max and Olaf for letting us show their work.
Also a big shout to WINDERMERE CANOE and KAYAK, for the support and the unexpected treat of a goody drybag for all. Nice one.
The proceeds make rainchasers independent for another year and will hopefully push us a bit further forward with the river levels systems. That means we can rant about anything we (or you) like, and squeeze the most enjoyment out of the whitewater resources we have in these parts. Watch out for a new stream of data from the EA this week and fresh video short competition with awesome prizes.
See you on the river :-) |
