So the skiiing season is winding up, and its likely to rain less here, so we should turn our attention to using all that lovely meltwater elsewhere. We've been sniffing around to see how much snow there is in the northern hemisphere...
Europe has an above average snowpack so France, Italy and Austria all have snow that is going to melt. Obviously how this gets used up during the spring and summer will depend on conditions later, but there is room for optimisim.
Over in North America the picture is more mixed. The East Coast has less than 50% snow pack and ther is some worry about summer drought! California is about 100% (i.e. expected levels), but the northern states (Oregon,W ashington, Montana, Wyoming and the fantastic Idaho) should all have a good season. The Canadian Rockies also have above average snow, so expect levels to be high through the spring and summer. Alaska though has a very low snow pack (around 50% again) -so no excuses for not getting the 'triple crown' this year! (apart from fear, ability, cost etc! For further info on North America and elsewhere click here We will try and keep you informed every so often as the season progresses. If anyone goes out and wants to let us know what they have found then great (some pictures and vid would be nice as well!)
