Photos of Aira Beck just added to Gallery  (and the ranchasing blog has it as well)

more details here

This has been a project over the last few months which has taken several days of exploration and attempts. Often speculated over, but never actually investigated, a walk of the whole river revealed 4 km of narrow gorges lots of small falls, a few big falls, a few portages and lots of trees. First run of the lower section below Dockray to Aira Force proved it to be great paddling but was left unfinished after a dislocted shoulder on an easy section halted proceedings.

Second attempt in high water began right at the top and proved the Upper gorge to also contain great paddling although some tree blockages leave something to return for. Unfortunately these high levels meant most of the lower river was portaged.

The last visit snatched after a short downpour was only just possible in low water but allowed the final falls below the Aira Force portage to be run completeing all the possible falls (bar one perhaps!!!!)

Next task is to clear all the remaining wood (Chainsaw volunteers needed) to give one of the best beck runs in the lakes. Easy access for full run or sections, one of the most scenic runs, entertaining falls, some harder ones to test you, some even harder ones to leave for next time, and the final bonus is that it has a guage by the bridge at the egress giving predictable levels. Ned & I ran it last Sunday and the level on the guage was 6. This would be a minimum for a descent. Go try it.
